Fair Housing - Identify Discrimination

An allegation of discrimination may or may not arise due to overtly malicious actions. Discrimination can be alleged because of a lack of communication, and accusations can come about when a property owner or owner's representative is unintentionally insensitive to a resident or prospective resident.

Being aware of the requirements of the Fair Housing Act and ensuring clear, consistent communication with all residents and prospective residents can prevent potential allegations of discrimination. The keys are knowledge and communication.

Get familiar with what the Fair Housing Act requires. If you are a resident, knowing your rights can help you recognize whether or not you are being treated fairly. If you are a property owner, manager or staff member, knowledge and sensitivity can protect you from stumbling into a situation where a resident or prospective resident could feel unfairly treated.
