March on Crime 2016

HAA is proud to have sponsored the Southwest Management District March On Crime luncheon at Houston Baptist University.

Pictured in the photo above are (from left) board member Rick Ogden, board chair Kenneth Li, board member Don Wang, deputy executive director Brian Burks, board member Steve Moore, HPD executive assistance chief George Buenik, HPD assistant chief John Chen, board member Fred Bhandara and board member Harry Shani.

A number of Houston Police Department officers were honored for their invaluable commitment to protecting the southwest area of Houston. March On Crime is a program that started 30 years ago in an effort to engage community involvement in policing.

“Policing is a community effort,” Alice Lee executive director said.

We heard opening remarks from Texas Rep. Gene Wu and Councilman Mike Laster.

In the last year, crime rates have dropped in the southwest area according to Executive Assistant Chief George T. Buenik. The HPD is continuing to emphasize the need for community involvement.

Buenik spoke about the addition of body cameras to their equipment, which the officers will be trained on starting next month. Body cameras promote community trust and consequently community participation.

HPD is anticipating hiring about 180 new officers within the first six months of 2016.
